Senior Instructor Biographies

Mike Spodnik SOC is a veteran HD Cinematographer, based in Los Angeles, with extensive experience working with the Sony CineAlta family of HD cameras. Mr. Spodnik is the premier HD Director of Photography for Viacom¡®s Nickelodeon Channel, having shot over 140 episodes of HD television shows and Movies of the Week for shows such as iCarly, Drake and Josh, Zoey 101, with Jamie Lynn Spears. He has shot numerous HD commercials for the US and international markets and several feature films, including Up Michigan, which was one of the first feature films shot in 24p HD. Mr. Spodnik is also an accomplished engineer and works with the Sony Corporation of America as a consultant on CineAlta cameras. He is an active member of the International Cinematographers Guild (Local 600 -IATSE) and The Society of Operating Cameramen.

George Palmer is the owner of HDPIX, Inc., of Las Vegas, Nevada, an international digital imaging and HD engineering services company that has served the feature film and primetime television industries for over three decades. Mr. Palmer¡®s accomplished background includes HD consulting and systems design, video engineering, optics and imaging research, digital cinema production. He provides some of the most thorough technical training on the CineAlta cameras and workflow available. Among his feature credits are Michael Mann¡®s Collateral, as a Camera Specialist, and Miami Vice, as a Digital Imaging Engineer. Mr. Palmer recently completed work on two features, Black Water Transit and Shuttle, as a Digital Imaging Technician (D.I.T.)

Jae-mo Koo is a Professor of Cinematography at South Korea¡®s Kongju Communication Arts College. Prof. Koo is also an accomplished Director and Director of Photography in both film and digital cinematography. Since attending one of the first Santa Fe HD Workshops, he has trained over 1,000 DP¡®s, Camera Operators and ACs in Korea and helped them get their starts in HD production with Sony¡®s CineAlta systems. Prof. Koo¡®s international filmography includes the Chinese feature film Big Ear and the first Korean feature to be shot in 24p HD, Desire. In addition to HD music videos, commercials and documentaries, he has authored several books on HD production, including the comprehensive Digital High Definition Filmmaking. Prof. Koo ahs designed and operates HD underwater workshops out of Korea.


Tom Piozet is a Director of Photography and the owner of Home Planet Productions, based in Santa Monica, California. For more than twenty years, he has worked in every genre of television and motion picture production, including documentaries, news magazines, feature films and commercials. Mr. Piozet was among the first in the United States to purchase a Sony HDCam and has been working with HD formats for nearly a decade. Home Planet provides start to finish HD services to clients ranging from Discovery Networks and National Geographic, to major Hollywood Studios such as Disney, Sony, and Paramount. Home Planet provides Underwater F900 HDCAMs and HD workflow expertise to Jean-Michel Cousteau¡®s ongoing PBS series and BBC¡®s acclaimed Planet Earth. Mr. Piozet has a long history of film and HD production in Asia and maintains an ever-growing HD stock footage library. www.homeplanetproductions.com


Vincent Gancie operates Gancie Television, Inc., (GTi) a full-service programming and production company based in Washington, DC, specializing in high definition documentary production. He has nearly 30 years of experience as director, cameraman and editor, in which he has traveled from rain forests and war zones, to presidential palaces and remote resorts. He has also won awards for his work as a producer and writer. GTi was among the first production companies in the United States to offer HDCam documentary camera crews. It was this early exposure to Sony¡®s CineAlta systems that led Mr. Gancie to create The Santa Fe HD Workshops, with assistance from Jeff Cree of the Sony Corporation of America, in an effort to provide in-depth, high-level HD training.
